Be an Art Explore at the Hunter Museum of American Art

Be an art explorer at the Hunter Museum, a great place for families to play, discover and learn together. Stroll through the Museum's turn-of-the-century mansion, cruise through the groovy 1970s building and enjoy amazing views of the Tennessee River from the futuristic contemporary building. As you explore through the Hunter galleries, families will find more than just great art. They'll also catch glimpses of important people, places and events in America's history—like an imposing portrait of George Washington, Andy Warhol's pop art representation of Jacqueline Kenney or works by Winslow Homer and Grandma Moses. Kids can pick up a free Art Explorer's kit and get the inside scoop on different works of art and the stories behind them.

The Hunter Museum is designed for families of all kinds. Uncover hidden treasures in each gallery; read, draw or watch videos; and use computers to learn more about art. Stroll, skip or run in the Hunter's Sculpture Plaza. The Hunter is a place where you can laugh, share, learn, grow, talk and have fun.

Don't miss the brilliant colors and rich patterns found in the work of acclaimed artist Loïs Mailou Jones. The traveling exhibit, Loïs Mailou Jones: A Life in Vibrant Color, showcases more than 70 works including paintings, drawings and textile designs.

Field Guide / Scrapbook Photo Opportunities

  • Money may not buy happiness, but the dancing couple in the Hunter Museum's sculpture, "Free Money" certainly look as if they're having a good time. Strike your own pose in front of this whimsical sculpture.
  • It's a bird, it's a plane, it's an art museum: the swooping curves of the Hunter Museum's contemporary wing have been compared to bird's wings, clouds and airplane wings. The south end of the Walnut Street Bridge is a great place to capture the unique lines of the Hunter's newest addition.
